Tips for Better Sleep With Ankylosing Spondylitis

Hey there, night owls! Ever experienced those sleepless nights, a roller coaster that even the Sandman might find a bit too thrilling? While I haven’t danced with insomnia due to ankylosing spondylitis, let me share the tale of post-hip replacement surgery shenanigans.

Picture this: a rehab hospital, me, and a bed that seemed to have a vendetta against my dreams.

So, there I was, fresh out of hip replacement surgery, thinking my nights would be filled with dreams of disco dancing. Little did I know, the real party was just beginning, and it was more of a stay-awake-so-you-don’t-miss-the-fun affair. The anesthesia had its grand exit plan, and it made sure I was wide awake for the farewell tour.

Now, I wasn’t battling pain; in fact, my left hip was living its best life, feeling like a rock star. But the anesthesia hangover was like a nonstop comedy show in my brain, with no off switch. I became a reluctant audience member, waiting for the punchline that would lead me into the sweet embrace of sleep.

Those sleepless nights were like a cruel roller coaster, each moment stretching into eternity. The more I wanted to sleep, the more elusive it became. The experience left an indelible mark, and I truly sympathize with those who can’t sleep at night due to pain or anxious thoughts about a future with AS.

But fear not!! I’ve gathered some tips along the way, so you can embark on a journey to conquer those elusive ZZZs. Here are some strategies that I trust will usher in some restful nights for you.

Create a Soothing Bedtime Ritual

It could be anything from sipping a warm cup of herbal tea to reading a few pages of a comforting book. Establishing a routine signals to your body that it’s time to wind down, making it easier to transition into sleep.

Digital Detox

Give your mind a break from the digital chatter. Switch off electronic devices at least an hour before bedtime. The artificial blue light emitted by screens can interfere with the production of melatonin, the hormone responsible for sleep. Opt for a good old-fashioned book instead.
